risk and protective factors
Although it is a problematic illness and lots of people suffer from it, it can be prevented which will have a great impact as it will reduce the prevalence therefore decreasing the negative consequences such as mortality/morbidity rates, because one of the main reason that causes diabetes is negative lifestyle factors, as a result we need to know the risk and protective factors in order to reduce the negative consequences. Yet the type of diabetes varies so it is quite different because type 1 may be from genetic factors or viral infections and type 2 is lifestyle factors.

social determinants
Social determinants can
affect an individual’s health because they are the conditions
in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are
shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national
and local levels, that are categorize in 3 main groups.
Socio- cultural
The aboriginal or torris straight islanders are at a disadvantage due to lack of access to education and medical care as a result they are unable to check their health regularly and are less aware, cautious of the illness.
Another contributing factor is the social acceptance of alcohol that is considered normal if a person intakes a dangerously high intake of alcohol, thus it is extremely popular for celebrating, parties and gatherings in Australia, it is considered normal to Australian lifestyle, like a daily routine.
Socio economic status
Because they lack education, employment and income, they are more likely to consume large amounts of alcohol, be obese due to unhealthy diet since its more cheaper which usually contain high in saturated fats, and are less likely to engage in physical actively
because they are busy working.
Environment determinants
People living in rural or remote areas have less medical resources so they don’t have regular checkups, or people working in harsh conditions that may be filled with chemicals or be unhygienic can cause a virus/infection/reaction that impacts on the pancreas ability to create insulin hormone resulting to diabetes. (Biological issues)
Diabetes is major problem in Australia because it impacts on the both the individual and their surroundings and can be past to the next generations, not only that it can undeniably impact on their other determinants of health, not only physically but also mentally and socially because the person may have low self esteem, avoiding people due to the fact that they feel anxious and depress about their health, weight etc. As a result they may isolate or look down on themselves, eventually can’t handle it and harm themselves or commit suicide. They will also be less motivated to exercise because too embarrassed or believe it’s too late; therefore it can lead to even more diseases such as cardio vascular disease.
